About This Project

Created and curated by Associate Professor Zhijian Kevin Yang

The Chinese Proficiency Lab is a personal initiative born from nearly two decades of teaching experience. It was designed to provide students and teachers with authentic materials aligned with ILR standards and DLPT practice. The site’s goal is to create a sustainable, independent hub that both supports learners with rich resources and provides abundant ILR level‑specific authentic materials.

The vision and design come from Associate Professor Zhijian Kevin Yang, who has dedicated over 20 years to teaching Chinese to American learners. This website is the culmination of his pedagogical insights and passion for empowering students through structured, meaningful, and engaging content.

Background

This project began as a retirement plan — a way to continue serving learners while staying active in the language education community. The lessons and materials provided here are developed independently and reflect years of classroom experience.

Associate Professor Yang’s journey from Inner Mongolia to Oregon, United States, where he earned an M.A. in Speech Communication from Portland State University, is filled with the generous support of countless American friends and mentors. In particular, he expresses his deepest gratitude to Jeff MacDonald, Margaret Willson, Gary MacDonald, Professor Steve Kosokoff, and Mary Cates. Their encouragement, financial support, and friendship made his educational dreams possible and laid the foundation for this lifelong project dedicated to language education and cultural understanding.

This project is also a way to give back — to the country, to the community of learners and educators, and to all who believe that language learning is a bridge to mutual understanding and shared progress.
